How Often Should You Re-Gas Your Car's Air Conditioning?

Published 2 April 2026 ยท Randwick Auto Air Conditioning

A re-gas is the single most common car air conditioning service we carry out โ€” but a lot of drivers arenโ€™t sure how often itโ€™s actually needed. Hereโ€™s a clear guide.

The short answer: every 1.5 to 2 years

Even a perfectly healthy air conditioning system loses a small amount of refrigerant over time. As a rule of thumb, having your system re-gassed every 18 months to two years keeps cooling at its best and helps the compressor stay lubricated.

If you wait until the air is barely cool before acting, youโ€™ve usually left it longer than ideal โ€” and you may have caused extra wear in the process.

Signs youโ€™re overdue

  • The air isnโ€™t as cold as it used to be
  • It takes longer to cool the cabin on a hot day
  • The system struggles in stop-start traffic
  • You notice a faint musty smell (often a sign of a neglected system)

What a proper re-gas involves

A re-gas is more than connecting a bottle of gas. Done correctly, it includes:

  1. Recovering the old refrigerant safely
  2. A deep vacuum to remove moisture and any remaining gas
  3. A vacuum leak test to confirm the system holds pressure
  4. Recharging with the exact manufacturer-spec refrigerant (R134a or R1234yf)
  5. An oil top-up and UV dye to protect the compressor and reveal future leaks
  6. Re-testing to confirm cold output

Why not just โ€œtop it upโ€?

Topping up without a vacuum and leak test traps moisture in the system, which corrodes components and forms acids over time. It also masks leaks instead of finding them. A proper re-gas costs a little more upfront and saves you far more down the track.
